The Navy’s newest warship is powered by Linux | Ars Technica

Off the shelf hardware means maintainable & upgradable hardware.
Hopefully the software doesn't play any stupid tricks that make it reliant on soon to be outdated hardware, OS, or utilities.

Very interesting article. Its a concept for a ship that has actually been written about in fiction for awhile. Probably for longer than I have known about. The books are written by Clive Cussler and make of his series known as The Oregon Files. Very good read and I'm sure his ship will or could be used in similar ways as the one in the books.
